Savvy Secondhand Shopping Part 2: Transforming your find

The next part in becoming a thrift store master, check here for part 1, is to see potential in certain pieces and DYI the crap out of it!

Take these $5 denim shorts for example,

Nothing too special, but for the low low price of $5 I couldn't leave them behind. Although, they aren't really the style of shorts that I would choose, I knew that with a little magic, and some good hours spent DIYing, I could transform these babies into something beautiful.

And I did just that, heres how:

Step 1: Get your tools handy!

All you'll need is a pair of scissors and a pair of tweezers. A pumas stone is optional.

Step 2: Making the shorts cutting edge.

Take your scissors and cut horizontal slits parallel to each other, about a half an inch apart. The amount, and the length of slits you do, is completely up to you!

Step 3: Grab your tweezers.

Taking your tweezers patiently start to pull out the blue thread that runs vertical, you should be left with the white, horizontal thread. I recommend getting yourself situated with a great movie, or TV show (I'm loving the show Suits!!), because this takes a wee bit of time. But when you're done it's definitely worth it!

Step 4: Ruff  it up.

I didn't want to settle for just rips in my shorts, that is a questionable statement...., I didn't feel that I had completely transformed my shorts to their full potential, so CAREFULLY with my scissors I cut the edge of all the pockets, front and back, then CAREFULLY ran the side of the scissor back and forth to reveal the threads. Be careful!

Step 5:  Get your stress out!

To vamp your shorts up a bit more, take a pumas stone and rub it in spots that you want the colour to look more faded. Aim for the middle of the denim to get the illusion of smaller legs, the light denim in contrast to the darker denim will give you that effect! Plus you're taking your stress and putting it to good use!

Step 6: Wash it!

The final step is to throw your beauty shorts into the washing machine, to ruff up the edges, and your done!

Easy peesie lemon squeeze.

If you're oh so curious as to how mine turned out, stay tuned, as I will be posting some looks as to how I styled the finish product!

It's crazy how some ripped shorts can go for a whopping $60!!! And these were only $5, plus I got to customize them to my liking!

Give this a try, the best part is that you can't go wrong, the more wrong you do, the better the distressed out come will be!

Savvy Secondhand Shopping Part 1: The 3 Tips You Need to Know About Thrift Store Shopping

What, what. What. What.
What, what. What. What.

I'm gonna pop some tags, only got $20 in my pocket....

JUST KIDDING!

Hi ya, hello, hi, I think it's fair to say that summer is now in full swing. Going to the beach, getting ice cream, shopping the summer sales, browsing local markets, going on vacation; all of these are must-do summer actives, but they definitely can add up in cost!

I can honestly say that my summer shopping spree, and frequent trips to Starbucks, have made my wallet feel pretty lonely. Luckily, I have found an activity that involves fashion, bargains and amazing hidden gems; also known as thrift shopping.

I will admit that I was opposed to secondhand stores for quite some time, my previous experiences in them were smelly, gross, and tiring; but know that I have found some stores that offer stylish clothing, in great condition, for amazing deals, I can honestly say that I'm hooked.

The thought of going into a store with only one of everything can be one of two things; for one it could seem overwhelming and exhausting, but it also offers the challenge of finding a great piece hidden on the rack, smushed between layers of less appealing apparel.
That moment you find a designer item and it's less than $10!

To help you get hyped to hit up a thrift store, and become a savvy secondhand shopper I have 3 tips you need to know to make sure you have the best time!

1. If you love it, buy it!

This is very important, the beauty about secondhand stores is that there is only one of everything, so if you love it, buy it. The risk of leaving it behind, could mean that the next chic shopper, will pick it up, and you will have missed out! Plus, with the cheap prices it's justifiable and it won't break the bank.

2. Don't Rush!

Take time to search, it may seem tedious, but when you find that special something it will be well worth it! Start with the clothing, the store is normally 2/3 clothing so use up you energy raiding the racks, then end with the shoes and accessories. It takes way less energy trying on shoes and accessories then it does clothes.

3. Be Creative!

Have an open mind to everything you see. Try to picture how you would style it. This is the perfect time to try something daring, because it will be inexpensive, so if you end up changing your mind or only wear it a few times, at least you got it for a bargain! This is the perfect place to find designer duds for cheap.

Happy Shopping!!
